FAQ
36 questions, answered plainly.
For sellers and for the business owners they sell to. Where something isn't built yet, we say so.
Finding and selling
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You tap a business on the map and press Build a website. Blockwalk writes the words from the business's public details and lays them out in one of eight templates. Switching templates takes one tap.
To change the words, click any headline or paragraph on the page and type. Or type what you want changed in plain English, like "add that we're open Sundays", and Blockwalk rewrites it for you. Swapping photos is being built now.
Which template should I use?
The one you'd pick if it were your shop. Hearth is warm and suits cafes and bakeries. Hardhat is black and yellow for roofers and tire shops. Clinic is calm, for dentists and vets. Director, Service and Studio cover most of the rest.
The Examples page shows every template, what kind of business each one suits, and a line to say when you show it. Editorial and Poster are the two Signature templates, on the Pro plan. They have big photos, motion, a gallery and richer sections. Editorial is photo-first with serif type, for work that photographs well. Poster uses bold sports-poster type, for fitness, photography and events.
How do I find businesses with no website?
Open the map. Green pins have no website listed. Amber pins have only a social page, like Instagram or Facebook. Grey pins already have a site. Filter by category to see only restaurants, auto shops, salons and so on.
The map uses OpenStreetMap today. It misses some businesses and some listings are out of date, so search the name on Google before you walk in. We plan to move to Google's business listings, which cover more shops.
How long does a build take?
A minute or two. Most of that is the words being written. You can build five sites on your phone before you leave the house.
Can I change a site after it's built?
Yes, before or after it goes live. Open it from My sites, then click the text to change it or type what you want changed. Changes save as you go.
Where are my sites saved?
In Blockwalk's database, under your account. Every site you build shows up on My sites with its status, its price, and any messages and change requests. Build on a laptop at night and open the same site on your phone the next day.
Signing in with your email is being built now and will be ready before launch.
What does the owner see?
A link to their own site. The site doesn't mention Blockwalk anywhere. It's built for a phone first, because that's where they'll look at it. It has a call button with their number and a contact form.
What if they say no?
Nothing happens. The preview stays up for 7 days from the day you built it, in case they change their mind, then it comes down. Text them that night, on day 3 and on day 6. Then stop and move to the next door.
Only live sites count toward your plan. A preview that never sells costs you the walk and nothing else.
Is it OK to build a site for a business that didn't ask for one?
The preview uses public details only: name, address, phone, hours and the type of business. It's hidden from Google, and nothing links to it except the link you send. If the owner says no, it comes down after 7 days.
Don't use their photos or logo until they say yes and send them to you. The preview uses placeholder photos until then.
Can two sellers pitch the same business?
Today, yes. Before launch we'll decide whether a business disappears from other sellers' maps once someone has sold it, and we'll post the rule here.
Can I sell anywhere?
The map works anywhere OpenStreetMap has data. We're starting with a soft launch in one city.
Some cities require a permit to sell door to door, even business to business. Check your city's rules before you start walking.
Money
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every new seller gets 7 days free. You pick Basic at $39.99 a month or Pro at $89.99 a month and add a card to start. Your card is not charged during the free week. Use the map, build sites and show them to owners.
On day 8 your card is charged for the plan you picked, unless you cancel online before then. Cancel before and you pay nothing. Coming soon: an email 3 days before the first charge. Until it is switched on, your account shows how many free days are left.
If the charge fails on day 8, you keep your plan while Stripe tries the card again. Your account shows a red banner with an Update card button.
How do I cancel my plan?
Online, any time, from Manage plan in your account. You don't have to call or email anyone. You keep your plan until the end of the period you've paid for, and the next charge doesn't happen.
Your card goes on file when you start, and it's charged on day 8. Cancel online before then and nothing is charged. Coming soon: an email 3 days before, with the amount and a cancel link.
Taxes are extra where they apply. Your plan renews every month on the same date until you cancel.
Your clients' sites stay up after you cancel. Their monthly payments go to Blockwalk until you pick a plan again. See "What happens to my clients' sites if my plan ends?".
What's the difference between Basic and Pro?
Basic is $39.99 a month. It covers up to 3 live client sites, the 6 classic templates and AI edits.
Pro is $89.99 a month. It covers as many live client sites as you sell, the Signature templates (Editorial and Poster). Priority support is coming once the support inbox opens.
On either plan you keep 90% of each client payment after Stripe's card fee. At $200 a month, about $173 reaches you, so 2312 clients cover Basic and 5202 clients cover Pro.
These prices can change before launch. If they do, the pricing page changes first, before anyone is charged.
How do I get paid?
When payments launch, you connect a Stripe account. It takes about 5 minutes and needs your ID and bank details. You send the owner a checkout link. The owner pays one all-in price. Stripe's card fee comes off first, then 90% of what is left goes to you and 10% to Blockwalk. So the card fee is shared 90/10, the same way as the money. There are no invoices to chase.
What does Blockwalk take?
Two things. Your plan, which is $39.99 or $89.99 a month after your 7 free days. And 10% of what is left of each payment after Stripe's card fee, on the build fee and on every monthly payment. The card fee is Stripe's, not ours, and it is shared the same way as the money.
On a $200 monthly client, Stripe's card fee is about $7.50. Of the rest, you get about $173 and we get about $19. The owner sees one price, $200, with taxes extra.
A client pays one all-in price, and taxes are extra. Out of each payment, Stripe's card fee comes off first. You keep 90% of what is left. Blockwalk keeps 10%. So the card fee is shared 90/10, the same way as the money.
Who sets the price the owner pays?
You do. The editor starts you at $1,000 to set up and $200 a month, with everything included and taxes extra. Change either number before you send the checkout link.
Can I bill my clients myself?
In the US, billing runs through Blockwalk. That's how the split, your payouts, and the site going live or offline all happen without you doing anything.
For sellers in countries Stripe can't pay out to, we plan a bill-them-yourself mode where a plan keeps your clients' sites online.
What happens if the owner stops paying?
When payments launch: Stripe retries the card, the site stays up meanwhile, and My sites shows a Card failed flag. An email to you is coming soon. If the subscription ends, the site shows a "temporarily unavailable" page at the end of the month they paid for.
We keep the content. If they pay again, the site comes back as it was.
What happens to my clients' sites if my plan ends?
Their sites stay up. The owners see the same site at the same price.
While you have no plan, what each client pays every month goes to Blockwalk, because Blockwalk is the one keeping the site up. You lose your 90% on those payments, and it is not paid back later. You also lose the map, AI edits and new live sites.
Pick a plan again and the 90/10 split starts again from the next client payment. A client is never charged twice. This is the rule at launch and the payment routing is being built now. The terms that say so are a draft until a lawyer has read them.
Can I charge for extra work?
When it launches, yes. Put a price on a change request and the owner gets a link to pay it. Same rule: Stripe's card fee first, then 90% of the rest to you.
Today you can see each request and mark it done.
What about taxes?
You're running your own small business, so you pay tax on what you earn. In the US, Stripe sends tax forms for connected accounts when the law requires it. Ask an accountant how it applies to you.
For the business owner
Who hosts the site?
Blockwalk does. Hosting, the security certificate and keeping the site online are part of the monthly price. The owner never deals with a web host.
Can the owner use their own web address?
When custom domains launch, yes. The domain is registered in the business's name. You or the owner add two records at the domain company, and we set up the security certificate.
Until then, the site lives on its own address like rosas-taqueria followed by our client-site domain.
Connecting a domain you already own is free on every plan. 1 domain on Basic, up to 10 on Pro. Pro also includes $20 a year toward buying up to 3 domains. You pay the rest. Buying a domain through Blockwalk is coming soon. All of this is coming soon.
How does the owner ask for changes?
Every site has an owner page. The owner types what they want changed, like new hours or a Sunday special. It lands in your inbox on My sites. When you're done, you mark it done and they can see it.
Owners don't edit the site themselves. They ask, and you make the change.
When accounts launch, owners will sign in to that page with a link sent to their email.
Where do messages from the contact form go?
To the owner's page and to your inbox on My sites. When email launches, the owner also gets each message by email the moment it's sent.
Can customers book an appointment on the site?
Yes, for businesses that book visits. Barbers, salons, spas, dentists, clinics, mechanics, cleaners, tutors and photographers get a Book a visit section by default. Restaurants and shops get none. You can switch it on or off in the editor.
A customer picks a day and a time, leaves a name and a phone number, and sends a request. The time is held for them, and nobody else can take it. The owner confirms it. Nothing is charged.
If the owner has not set their hours yet, the section shows Call to book and the phone number instead of an empty calendar.
How does the owner see and manage bookings?
On an Appointments page on the owner page: upcoming first, with the customer's name, phone, service, time and note. The owner confirms, cancels or marks each one done, and can add a booking from a phone call. A badge shows how many new requests are waiting. The page and the hours editor are being built now.
The owner sets their weekly hours, how long a booking lasts, a break between bookings, how much notice they need, days off and the services they offer.
Does the owner get a text or email when someone books?
Coming soon. Email is not switched on yet, so for now the owner checks the Appointments page. Say so when you set it up, and tell them to look each morning.
Is the booking section available in Spanish?
Yes. The section has a small English and Spanish switch. It starts in the visitor's browser language and remembers their choice. The owner's Appointments page has the same switch. The Spanish is written for US speakers and a native speaker should read it before you rely on it.
Will the site show up on Google?
Every live site has a page title, a description and the business's details in the format Google reads. Live sites are open to search engines. Previews are hidden from them.
Nobody can honestly promise a ranking, and we don't.
Is there a contract?
No. When payments launch, the owner pays monthly and cancels any month, online, from their owner page. The site stays up until the end of the month they paid for. The checkout page shows the price, the monthly renewal and how to cancel before they pay.
Who owns what, and leaving
Who owns the domain?
The business. A domain bought for a client is registered in the business's name. If they leave, they keep it.
Who owns the words and photos?
The business owns its text, photos, logo and name. Blockwalk owns the templates and the software that turn them into a website.
Is the content locked in?
No. When it launches, the owner page has a download button for the site's text and photos. The owner can take them to any other website builder. The template design stays with us.
What happens to my clients if I stop selling or close my account?
Their sites keep running as long as they pay. With no plan on your account, their monthly payments go to Blockwalk, the same as when a plan ends.
Before launch we'll publish how a client moves to a new seller when one leaves, and who answers their change requests meanwhile.
